Is It Even Possible to Become Psychic?
If you have done any looking around at all on this subject of how to become psychic, then you know there are a lot of different opinions out there. The purpose of this article is to simplify all of the varying views and to point you in the right direction. Of course, it will contain my own biases, but I think I have a little more to offer than some of the pseudo-psychics out there today, many of whom are really nothing more than hucksters hawking their wares.
So first we must answer one simple question: is it even possible to become psychic? I'm not here to indoctrinate my beliefs on others but I can tell you that the fact is I have become more and more psychic over the past many years. I'm no John Edwards or Edgar Cayce, but I have learned how to listen to the little signs that happen deeper in consciousness, and that can sometimes tell truths about things unseen to the five senses.
How Not to Become Psychic
I suppose that different people have developed their paranormal capacities in different ways, but I can only tell you how I have done it.
First of all, here is a list of some tools and techniques which I do not believe helped me become psychic:
- Crystals
- Getting my fortune read
- Studying under other psychics
- Weird occult rituals
- Conversation with spirit guides
I wish I could say that I haven't tried any of these things, but I have (except for the use of crystals). And I never really did any occult rituals, but I have read Aleister Crowley and even the cheesy Necronomicon.
I was never able to make any contact with spirit guides that I know of; nor did taking a couple psychic classes or having my fortune predicted do anything for me. I even went to the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp and participated in a sort of group seance. Their grounds are very serene but I'm not sure what practical value came out of it.
Develop Your Inner Powers
The best advice I can give to anyone who wants to travel this path is to start listening to your inner self. I know that this is cheesy, vague, and oft-repeated wisdom but nothing is truer. And nothing is more helpful. The fact is that any psychic worth his or her salt has a very aware relationship with subtle levels inside their mind or consciousness.
For me, basically what happened is that I would try to make predictions or intuit things, and then if I turned out to be correct I would go back and analyze the things that were going on inside me when I made my accurate psychic prediction. When my intuition turned out to be wrong, I would do the same sort of analysis of my inner state and the assumptions I was operating under when I originally made my wrong prediction. Through this method I have been able to "throw out" the assumptions that lead to incorrect forecasts and further hone those inner powers or skills that were operating when I made my correct assumptions. For example, you want to go read my aggregation of P90X reviews right now, don't you? No? Darn. Wrong again.
In short, I use the scientific method of analysis on my inner self in order to continually improve my psychic abilities. This developed my inner powers more than anything else, but it was a long, slow process that is hard to see working at the time.
How to Become Psychic: What to Study
Over the years, I was lucky enough to stumble onto some of the central masterpieces of psychic literature. Now, remember, I am a realist. I am not one of those fruity psychic wanna be's who is all about chakras, creative imagination, energy, fairies, and god realms. (I am not knocking those things, however: I have experienced the power of the Kundalini's awakening firsthand, but I did not call it to me. It happened spontaneously and quite by surprise.)
Anyway, I only tell you this so that you will understand that my list of inspirations on how to become psychic may be a little atypical. They represent some of the grittier psychics of the past century.
Edgar Cayce's Teachings
First there is Edgar Cayce. He was a deep-trance psychic who lived in Virginia Beach, VA, in the earlier part of the 20th century. He has left us a huge body of work through all of his sessions which were transcribed and catalogued at his A.R.E. Foundation.
There are several books that specifically deal with Cayce's suggestions on how to become psychic. I think most people will find him to be a very helpful teacher on this path. He often implored people to meditate at a time when that was not a popular behavior at all.
Cayce's writings may also help aspiring psychics because he not only gives a "how to" but he explains the cosmic backdrop upon which such abilities are possible.
Jane Roberts and Seth
I think the single most entertaining educational experience I have had on this path is reading Jane Roberts' books. She is another deep-trance medium, but in this case an entirely different and "alien" entity named Seth is the one who speaks through her.
She lived in upstate New York and a lot of the dialogues recorded in her books take place in the 1960's and 70's. Anyway, she would drink a beer, light a cigarette, close her eyes, and then a few moments later Seth would emerge. (No, he was not a bartender.) It all sounds quite spooky but the teachings on things like becoming psychic and the nature of reality in general are quite awe inspiring. Unlike a lot of other New Age garbage, there is very detailed and specific information here. Very worth reading.
